Founded by Karen Shore, Upstream Strategies reflects more than two decades of experience across public health, nonprofit, and food system contexts. Karen works with federal, state, and local agencies, health systems, funders, and mission-driven organizations to develop strategy, strengthen organizational capacity, and provide technical assistance that supports durable, adaptable approaches to food and nutrition initiatives that are effective, efficient, and scalable.
Her work is informed by deep experience across policy, programs, and partnerships, with particular expertise in food is medicine, nutrition access, and community-based and institutional food systems. Engagements span rural, urban, and tribal communities across the U.S. and emphasize practical decision-making, course correction, and long-term impact.
Karen is an Adjunct Professor of Health Sciences at Rutgers University. She is a Doctor of Public Health candidate in Health Policy and Management at Johns Hopkins University, where she earned her MPH. She holds a BA from Smith College.
